Deep Cleaning to Stop Gum Disease

When normal scaling is not enough, it is a sign that inflammation may have spread below the gum line. Tartar and biofilm accumulated deep on the root surface are the direct causes of Periodontitis, which causes bone loss around the roots. “Root Planing” is a necessary and critical deep cleaning procedure. The dentist uses special instruments to completely remove these tartar and bacteria to stop the progression of the disease and help the gums return to good health.

Our Services

Root planing is a procedure that requires high precision and expertise. At SMILE AND SHINE, we pay attention to every step to provide the most comfortable and effective treatment.

  • Precise Diagnosis : We measure gum pocket depth and take X-rays to thoroughly assess the severity of the disease.
  • Treatment Under Anesthesia : The dentist will always administer local anesthesia before starting the treatment so that you feel no pain and are most comfortable throughout the procedure.
  • Appropriate Tools : We use Ultrasonic Scalers combined with specialized instruments (Curettes) to remove tartar under the gums and smooth the root surfaces.
  • Follow-up Planning : Root planing is just the beginning. We plan follow-up appointments for continuous monitoring and care to control the disease in the long term.

Who Should Consider Root Planing

The dentist will recommend root planing if signs of periodontitis are detected, which include:

  • Those diagnosed with Periodontitis.
  • Those with gum pockets deeper than normal (typically deeper than 4-5 millimeters).
  • Those experiencing excessive bleeding, swelling, or dark red gums.
  • Those with significant tartar buildup detected under the gum line via X-ray.

How to Prepare

Preparation is uncomplicated and mainly involves getting yourself ready physically and mentally.

  1. Understand the treatment plan : The dentist will explain how many visits are needed, as the treatment may be divided into sections (e.g., half-mouth per session).
  2. Get enough rest : Adequate rest helps your body prepare for the treatment and recover well.
  3. Eat beforehand : Since you may experience numbness and difficulty eating after the procedure, you should have a meal before your appointment.
  4. Provide medical history : Always inform the dentist about any underlying medical conditions and medications you are currently taking.

Root planing is not a scary procedure but a crucial step to stop the damage caused by gum disease and is the best way to preserve your natural teeth for as long as possible. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Cleaning “under the gums” may raise questions and concerns for many. We have compiled answers to frequently asked questions here to help you better understand this treatment.

Since this procedure is performed deeper than usual, the dentist will always administer a local anesthetic before starting, so you will not feel any pain during the treatment.

Normal scaling cleans tartar only “above the gum line.” Root planing is a deep cleaning process to remove tartar adhering to the root surface “under the gums,” an area that general scaling cannot reach.

It depends on the amount of tartar and the severity of the disease. Generally, the dentist will divide the treatment into 2-4 sessions to ensure thorough cleaning and to keep each session from being too long.

After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some soreness or tooth sensitivity for 1-2 days, which is normal and will gradually improve. You should avoid spicy and hard foods initially and rinse with warm salt water to help the gums heal faster.

If you maintain excellent oral hygiene and visit the dentist for regular scaling every 3-6 months as scheduled, you will not need to undergo root planing again. However, if oral care is neglected, the disease can return. Continuous care is therefore essential.
